RTI Behavior

October 2018: I have been working on a flow chart for development of behavior support plans for students as a reference to teachers who may need help figuring out how to develop behavior support plans. There is a picture of the first page to the right. If you click on it, you can view the document, but you may want to download it as a Word document for the headers and links to work. I will be adding the links to documents that are linked to the flow chart over the next few weeks!

June 2018: I attended the Southeastern PBIS Conference in Savannah, GA with a colleague, and loved it! This was a very helpful conference. I can see how a behaviorist could take PBIS the wrong way, but if you just need some structure to implementing behavior plans school-wide this is a great place to start. I still say that building community and relationships is the most important part of dealing with behavior in a positive way. Students have to know we care about and value them first. All school expectations should be explicitly taught at the beginning of the school year -- tier 1! Teachers must get time in the beginning of the school year to learn who their students are and what is important for each classroom community. Be person-centered first!

Older: Past struggles with students whose behavior was disruptive to their learning and that of others that was unchanged by punitive measures has driven my research, study and creation of this working process addressing how to do RTI for behavior.  We should look at the unexpected behavior and ask, "what anxiety/discomfort/fear/loss of control is that student having that is helping to create this unexpected behavior.  Customizing the environment for a child that is struggling with growing as a learner or preventing others from growing as a learner can meet the needs of that student.

These things are a resource for educators and not to be used without care or concern for the privacy and best interests of children as learners.  Click on the images to the right to find slides and handouts on RTI Behavior presented at the 2014 Mountain Brook Learning Conference.

Look for an update soon! I have learned more and tried to simplify more as well. February 2017
